Can you burn conifer wood?

10/16/20251 min read

This week we dismantled and felled two large mature conifers and, after discussion with the client about what is posted online, all the timber waste was logged for firewood and branches chipped for a local allotment.
The conventional wisdom is that conifer wood is not good for firewood, because it burns too quickly, doesn't produce much heat, spits and the sap cokes up your chimney. As with many opinions, there is some truth in all of that, but non of it prevents conifer being a useful heat source. The secret is to season it properly.
It's important to split Conifer logs and leave outside for at least a year or until they have gone grey. The sap and spitting will then be greatly reduced. Yes, it does burn quicker than hardwood, but the heat produced is the same, just over a shorter period. Firewood spitting is not a problem in a stove and even acceptable on an open fire with a fireguard. Ive used conifer as a firewood for many years, and the chimney sweep has never complained😁
